Mitsubishi Repair: Oxygen sensor Eclipse, o2 sensor, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
96 mitsubishi Eclipse,2.0L, auto, non-turbo,4cyl
I need to locate the downstream Oxygen sensor and am wondering how hard it is to replace myself. I am under the impression that it is just a matter of removing the old one by unscrewing it & disconnecting the wires and screwing in a new one, but it is really tough to get at, or is it fairly accessible?

Answer
Gail,
The downstream O2 sensor is located on/just after your catalytic converter.  There is a special socket used to remove the O2 sensor.  You could remove it without the socket, but it won't be easy.  If you have an AutoZone in your area, they can loan you an O2 sensor removal/installation tool for free.  Just go in and ask for a loaner tool.

They are not that difficult to replace.  Just be SURE your car has cooled down completely.  You will get badly burned if you try to remove the O2 sensor right after driving the car.

I would recommend getting the O2 sensor right from the dealership.  This way you're sure it'll fit and that the wiring harness is the correct length.  The part number for the downstream O2 sensor for your car is M05269711.  It goes for around $140-$175
Good luck!
