Mitsubishi Repair: Clutch, eagle talon tsi, gm synchromesh

Question
I have a 92 Eagle Talon tsi, manual, which has many similar parts of the Eclipse. Several weeks ago I noticed a whining noise when I leave out on the clutch. I replaced me slave cylinder but that did not help. Last week my clutch would not engage. When I let out on the clutch the car does not move. Sometimes when the car is cold the clutch will engage for a few minutes and then stops engaging. I noticed yesterday that when I let out on the clutch the cable speedometer moved some when I engaged the clutch. I am confused as to whether this is a clutch problem or something else associated with the drivetrain. I am about to purchase a new clutch kit but I'd like to be sure that is indeed the problem. Can somebody help me?

Answer
Steven,
If your current clutch has over 70k miles on it, its a good idea to change the clutch anyway.  The clutch disc, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing may be worn out, and should be replaced.

Also be sure you are using clean transmission fluid.  Your tranny requires a GL-4 fluid.  Most auto parts stores sells a GL-5 viscosity grade fluid, but that can cause hard shifting and grinding.  A full synthetic fluid is best.  BG Synchro Shift II, GM SynchroMesh, and Redline MTF are all good fluids.

Check your cable linkage attached to your shifter.  Many times that can come loose.  You should also check your cable bushings, which are attached to your transmission.  You'll see them on two levers attached to your transmission connected to cables.  It's near your speedometer cable, and your speedometer cable should also be checked to be sure it's securely attached.
Good luck!
