Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi Eclipse 93(standard) problem with alternator belt breaking, mitsubishi eclipse 93, power steering pump

Question
My son drives 93 Mitsubishi (manual) and has the following problems.  Whenever he starts to drive, the car develops a high pitch squeaking noise which is coming from under the hood. It will last for a minute or two and than stops. In addition, "alternator" belt (not sure if this is proper name for it) has broken 3 times during last 5 months. I am not sure if the belt and squeaking are part of the same problem, although they seem connected. Mechanic replaced the belt, but seems not able to find the problem of squeak and constant braking of the belt. We are very frustrated, specially that my son is an new driver, and when the belt breaks, he completely looses power steering. Can you please help? If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Answer
Maria,
A high pitched squealing noise is almost always caused by a belt that is not tightened properly, or an old and worn belt.  The belt you may be actually having the problem with could be the power steering belt.  That belt is connected to the power steering pump, which is in the upper, front drivers side of the engine compartment.  If that belt brakes, it will be extremely hard to turn the steering wheel.  The alternator is located directly below the power steering pump.  You may want to confirm which belt your mechanic actually changed.  If the belt keeps snapping, it may be due to the fact that your belt is too tight.  The belt tensioner should be inspected and replaced if necessary.

The squealing noise may also be caused by a bad power steering pulley.  That pulley may not be turning properly, and could be causing excess friction on the belt; which could cause it to break prematurely.  Have your pulley, belts and tensioner inspected.
Good luck!
