Mitsubishi Repair: Overheating, haynes book, radiator cap

Question
Hello Tim,
I own a 1990 Mirage with a 1.5L engine. I overheated due to a shreded fanbelt.  After replacing it, the car drove for 15 minutes then overheated again. My therostat was in pieces so I removed all the pieces and put it back together. Still it overheated. When I open my radiator cap, water shoots out of it, as if it cannot go into the engine. I am not finding any parts of the thermostat or any other blockage. I could really use so advice. What do I check now. Since water is shooting out of my radiator, I assume my water pump is working. There is currently no theromstat in it. I wanted the water to flow unobstructed, it did not work.
Thanks in advance,
Ireneo
