Mitsubishi Repair: Galant no spark, manual haynes, sohc engine

Question
Anthony, I have a 1990 Galant with the SOHC engine. It didn't start, so I checked for spark, and have none. I did a tune-up, since I was under the hood, and changed the plugs, cap, rotor, and coil. I also changed the distributor, since I didn't have 12V at the coil. It still has NO spark, and I did notice a burnt electronic smell when this problem started. I also noticed that 2 wires from the distributor do NOT run to the coil, but instead, go into the harness running into the passenger compartment. Is the ECU suspect in these cars? I have been trying to find a wiring diagram so I can intelligently test, but I can't find where to purchase a factory shop manual. Haynes doesn't have all the diagrams, and Chilton's is sparse. Any clues? Thanks. ( I am ASE certified, but this problem is perplexing w/o a wiring diagram).

Answer
Richard,
Yes, that year of Mitsubishi does have a known issue with the ECU.  Read this article for further information:

An electronic burning smell from the passenger compartment is typical when the ECU fails.  I believe your ECU is located behind your glove box or behind your radio.  Pull it, and check for leaking capacitors.

Wiring diagrams for your ECU can really only be found from the factory service manual.  You can get order one from the dealership at a cost.  You can even check eBay to see if anyone is selling a factory shop manual.  You can also check this site:

They offer electronic versions of the factory service manual you're looking for.  Under the DSM section, you'll find information about your year of Galant.  It's techically illegal to own the electronic version without having a real service manual in your possession, but I'm sure you know that ;-)  You will find everything that's in the service manual contained on that electronic version.
Good luck!
