Mitsubishi Repair: Mitzibushi Galant 2000 model, egr solenoid, egr systems

Question
I have a 2000 Mitzibushi Galant GTZ that has a check engine light that will not go off. It began when my mechanic did a tune up on the car and noticed that it still had a miss in it and so he removed a part, and then the check engine light came on and i have replaced the EGR valve and he replaced the other part( a part that dealer said they could not find a reason for it) and the check engine light is still on and reads a problem with EGR flow. I don't know what eles to do and the mechanic says he doesn't know either and before I take it to the dealer and inccure a huge bill, I wanted to check with this website first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Trish,
Most EGR systems on most cars are not rocket science to figure out.  If you have no more warranty coverage on your vehicle through your delaership, you can shop around for other mechanics with less expensive labor costs.  Most dealerships charge between $75-$100 per hour in labor.  It's a ridiculous price, but they can charge what they want.

It would be interesting to know the "other part" that the dealership replaced along with the EGR valve.  If the EGR solenoid or any of the vacuum hoses leading to it are damaged, that can cause your check engine light to come on.  Find out from the dealership exact what else was replaced, and ask them why they felt they needed to replac it.

If you have an AutoZone store in your area, go to them and ask them to read your car's computer if your check engine light remains on.  They will perform this service for free.  If they pull up the same EGR Flow trouble code, than you'll know there's still an issue.  One of the AutoZone workers may even offer an inexpensive fix or may know a reliable mechanic in your area.  Dealership mechanics know a lot, but not everything.  Even easy solutions can escape them.
Good luck!
