Mitsubishi Repair: 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse Weird Start Problem, factory service manuals, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Anthony,
I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS, 2.0L, L4 SFI DOHC 16V, automatic transmission, with a weird start problem. Sometimes it starts but will not run. When I check the voltage at the coil primary (center pin), there's 0 vdc, hence it cannot start. When it decides to work, there's 12 vdc at this terminal. A schematic that I have, has the ignition key directy wired to this terminal when the key is in "run" position. Seems to me like a loose connection somewhere. Where can I get a good electrical schematic for this model so I can trace where the problem might be? On the other hand, do you know what might be causing this? By the way, a Mitsubishi dealer in P.R. had this car for 2 months and could not find the problem.

Thanks
Radames

Answer
Radames,
The best source of an eletrical schematic is from that factory service manual.  You can usually order one from the dealership.  Though they can be kind of expensive; sometimes around $120.  It consists of a full mechanical repair manual and a second electrical guide manual.  I've had good luck finding factory service manuals on eBay.

There are also some eletronic version of the factory service manuals available.  You can find them on eBay and from this site:

Your coil may just be burnt out, or there is a bad connection.  There is a chance your car's computer may be malfunctioning as well.  Most mechanics, including dealership mechanics, are usually good at finding mechanical problems, but when it comes to eletrical problems, most are under trained to diagnose those issues.  It may be worth your while to get a manual and diagnose and fix this problem yourself.
Good luck!
