Answer
Kristin,
Your timing belt should be changed 60,000 miles, so you're  overdue for a timing belt replacement.  Most of the time, there are no clear indications to know your timing belt needs replacing.  The best rule of thumb is mileage; don't go over 60,000 miles for your timing belt.  For your first timing belt change, several other items should be replaced along with the timing belt.  This is the list of items the mechanic will most likely suggest you replace:
- Main timing belt
- Balance belt
- 3 drive belts (power steering, alternator and A/C)
- Hydralic automatic tensioner
- Water pump

Those are typical items that recommend to be replaced.  The cost for a timing belt change can be a little expensive because of the time it takes for the job.  For most mechanical issues, I usually recommend a local mechanic to do the job.  But for a timing belt replacement, it's worth the extra money to have it done at the dealership.  If you have more than one Mitsubishi dealership in your area, call them all and ask for an estimate.  Surprising, many dealerships will charge different prices for service.  Call for an appointment.  If you wait too long, your old timing belt can break and that would destroy your engine.
Good luck!
