Mitsubishi Repair: 2nd gear, worst case scenario, redd

Question
I have a 1996 5-speed Eclipse and I cannot put it in 2nd gear.  What do I need to do to correct this problem.

Sincerely,
Sally Redd

Answer
Sally,
Typically this is caused by a faulty cable linkage, or even a worn bushing leading from your shifter cable to your transmission.  Have those items checked and adjusted if necessary.  Worst case scenario is that your sychronizers for your 2nd gear are completely worn down.

If when you car is turned off, and you're still not able to shift into 2nd gear, it most likely a cable issue.  But if the car is turned off, you can shift into gear just fine, but still cannot shift while the car is in motion, it could be a sychronizers.
Good luck!
