Mitsubishi Repair: 92 Talon Sputters often when accelerating, egr valve, salvage yards

Question
92 Talon, non-Turbo, 16 valve 2.0l DOHC, Manual; I have had a replacement engine put in the car since a shop helped me along the BLOWING the Engine process by not securing my oil filter after a Lube/Oil Change. Now I often have a problem with my engine sputtering to accelerate- like it is trying to catch-up to the flow of gas I am putting through on the accelerator. It most often is noticeable when I punch the gas to make a quick acceleration in order to pass another car. I have no engine lights illuminated. I already changed the PCV, and am looking for a EGR, but I cannot find a NAPA or Autozone who has the EGR valve. What is the normal thing that busts for my symptom, and what is the cost/where do I find a replacement EGR valve?  Thank you for your time!

Answer
James,
An EGR valve can cost you over $200 at some dealerships.  That's about the only place you'll find a new one.  If you're looking for a used one, call around to local salvage yards and ask if they have any 2.0L Eclipse/Talon/Lasers between '89-'94.  Any of those years will work.  You may even have good luck looking on eBay for another EGR.  You may be able to find one for just a few bucks.

A bad EGR can cause the symptoms you're describing.  Also, a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump can cause a similar problem as well.  Clogged fuel injectors are another possibilty.  Replacing the fuel filter every 2-3 years is routine maintaince that should be done.
Good luck!
