Tim:

I have a 1992 Plymouth Laser with 118K miles on it.  It has run really good and is normally quiet.  I had the oil changed today and now it 'ticks' at idle and acceleration.  I have in the past added an additive like 'RESTORE' to condition the valvel seals and guides, but that is all I have ever added to it.  Other than the new 'tick' it runs good.  Is there somehting that is adjustable with the valves or guides that I can tinker with?

Hi Patrick,

It's not the valves that is making this ticking noise it is the lifters which you can remove the top of cover off of the engine and look to see which ones are loose and adjust if able. But if you adjust them all and it still does that then they are wornout and need replacing

Tim:

I have been reading in the Haynes Manual and on-line and I found that a common ticking noise is caused by the valve lash adjusters being worn or stuck and replacing them is usually a good first try.  I took the valve cover off and everything looked good and tight.  Any thoughts?

Answer
then i would suggest try testing each one of them before replacing them before you get something you don't need. You can get a diagnois test done to it because i hate for you to replace them and it not be that,A diagnois test is very accurate and will point to your problem
