Mitsubishi Repair: clutch problems, clutch master cylinder, clutch fluid

Question
when i get in to my car and press the clutch it just dangles there and if i pump it for a little bit it will get some pressure but not much.  Just enough to get it in and out of gear.  It gets a little better as the car is running.  But it is getting worse as the days go by.

Answer
Ryan,
There can be a number of problems that could cause this.  First, check to make sure you have a adequate amount of transmission fluid.  If it's been over 30k-45k miles, it time to replace it.

Along those same line, check your clutch fluid level.  If the level is too low, you will have a problem shifting.  Most just use standard DOT 3 brake fluid to top off  clutch fluid.  If your clutch fluid is very low, it may have allowed air into the clutch that.  That too will cause your pedal to hit the floor before it'll shift.  The clutch lines would need to be bled in that instance.

Another common problem is a worn out clutch master cylinder.  If the springs in the clutch cylinder are worn, they would need to be replaced.  Also, if your clutch is really old (like around 100,000 miles or more) your clutch, itself, may need to be replaced. But your problem sounds mostly like a fluid issue.  Check the transmission fluid level and clutch fluid level first.  Then, have your clutch cylinder inspected.  You'll problem find your cause in one of those areas.
Good luck!
