Mitsubishi Repair: 1991 eclipse turbo wont stay running, fuel pump relay, auto parts stores

Question
I have purchased a 1991 eclipse turbo 5 speed and am having a problem keeping it running.  The car will start but after a short time the fuel pump relay will start clicking and the car shuts off.  I usually have to take the battery cable off to reset the computer to restart the car.  I have changed the fuel filters and the relay but still have the problem. Sometime the relay does not click and the car just shuts off. Could you aim me in the right direction?

Answer
Chuck,
First, you should check to make sure your fuel pump is functioning properly.  If you want to check this yourself, pick yourself up a service manual for your car.  Most auto parts stores sell a service manual for your Eclipse; Haynes or Chiltons will work.  There will be illustrated instructions on how to check your fuel pump.

If your fuel pump is fine, there could be a problem with your car's computer.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU is failing, you will have starting and running problems.  If the ECU is starting to fail, get it repaired before it fails completely.
Good luck!
