Mitsubishi Repair: 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES, highway traffic safety, traffic safety administration

Question
Hi Anthony,
I am in the process of purchasing a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES. I have read many transmission problems associated with this car at (see http://www.mitsubishisucks.com/cars/complaints/usa/models/lancer/2003.html).
Is this true or just a smear campaign? I need a car that is reliable for daily commute. Please advise.
Thanks,
Stanley

Answer
Stanley,
I'm sure some owners have had problems, but the mere fact that the website you found is called  mitsubishisucks.com is not going to have too many poitive things about any Mitsubishi products.  All cars can develope this problem.  I've heard of Chevys, Honda, Volkswagons, Toyota, Fords, Chryslers, etc have transmission problems as well.  Sometimes it's just bad luck on the car that the dealer hands you the keys to.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have only been one recall issued for the 2003 Lancer, and that had to do with the O2 sensor.  Most people I've read from have had a very good experience with the Lancer.  The only complaints I usually hear is that it doesn't have enough horsepower.  But if you're looking for an economical car, horsepower usually does not factor in.

If you really want a good feel for the car, see if you can find a car rental company in your area that has a Lancer that you could rent for a day or weekend.  Drive it around and see what you think.  Spending $60 on a rental car for a weekend is a lot cheaper than buying one.  Also, if you do decide to buy the Lancer, be sure you get as much information about whats covered under the current warranty.  And if there is any routine maintenence that is needed, make sure the dealership takes care of it before you buy it.
Good luck!
