Mitsubishi Repair: Eclipse stalling, belt tensioners, underdrive pulley

Question
I have a 1990 eclipse AWD TSI and when I start my car it squeals like crazy really loud and continues for a min or 2! and also the rpm slips down and down to the point i have to rev the engine to keep it from stalling! what can i do to fix these problems, please help! Thanks.

Answer
Geoff,
The squealing is most likely caused by a bad drive belt and/or underdrive pulley.  The belt tensionser can also go bad, causing your squealing problems.

If the belts are slipping, then that will cause varying stress on your crankshaft.  Many times if the belt having problems is the alternator belt, the alternator will not be able to provide adequate charge to the ignition components, which in turn can cause your RPMs to decrease.  Have all your drive belts (A/C, alternator, power steering) replaced.  You should also have the pulleys and belt tensioners inspected during the belt replacement.
Good luck!
