Mitsubishi Repair: clutch, gates belts, inner boots

Question
I have a 99 Mitsu Eclipse 2.0 non turbo engine and manual trans. I do most of my own work. When changing oil I noticed grease on the clutch release lever and fulcrum where they protrude through the release fork boot. Is this normal? Naturally, I wiped off the grease, but I'm curious if it will need repair. It has 80,000 mi, but I don't beat it at all.

Also, another unrelated problem is that the belt that runs around the power steering and AC comp. constantly squeals as it runs over the tensioner pulley. It is definitely tight, but I always need to use belt dressing to stop it. This only lasts a short while. I used a NAPA (Gates) belt. Should I be using an original belt from the dealer? I need to change this belt every year because it wears out so fast. The alternator belt almost never needs to be changed.

Answer
Jim,
If you're able to shift smoothly and you don't find yourself forcing the shift lever into gear when you press in the clutch pedal, I don't think you have a problem.  Check your inner and outer CV-boots for possible leaks or tears.  If the CV-boots develope a tear (especially the inner boots), the grease from inside the boots can leak out and cover components around them.  Also inspect your transmission for any possible leaks.

Constantly squealing belts can result from worn out tensioners.  Replace the belt tensioners for your drive belts.  It's possible the power steering pulley or the AC pulley is overly worn, but that's not as common as worn tensioners.  Gates belts are very good, and should be adequate for your power steering, AC and alternator.  I recommend OEM Mitsubishi belts right from the dealership.  They are not that much more expensive.  And if you ever change your timing belts, ONLY use OEM belts from your local dealership.
Good luck!
