Mitsubishi Repair: stalls at stops, mechanic check, timing adjuster

Question
1990 Mitsu. Montero, 3.0 litre, auto trans,186,000 miles. Engine stalls when applying brakes nearing stop signs unless auto. trans. is put in neutral and some gas pedal applied. ECU unit code free, idle motor appears to be making a sound and the throttle cable adjusting clip is moved fully back. New unstretched cable needed to adjust idle? Is adjustment of cable all that is needed to set idle? It's my father's ride and would like to help him out if I can. Thanks greatly for any thoughts and ideas. ps. new fuel pump, plugs, wires, and distributor cap and rotor installed.

Answer
Wolfgang,
Your throttle cable should be adjusted when the engine is warm.  There's more than just setting the throttle cable to adjust your idle.  There is an idle timing adjuster in your engine compartment.  You'll want a manual to show you exactly where it's located.  You'd have to ground that that connector, then ground your ECU.  On or near your throttle body, there is an idle setting screw.  Once your engine is running with the idle connector and the ECU grounded, you slowly let out the screw until your idle is within spec (probably between 700-900 rpm).

Usually once your idle is set, you should never need to set it again.  Your problem could be with a faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) motor.  The IAC regulates  the amount of air thats allowed into the engine when the throttle plate is closed.  If the IAC is faulty, it may not allowed enough air to enter the engine at idle and cause the car to stall.

Other possible problems could be a clogged air filter, clogged fuel filter, or possibly a bad timing belt.  I'd suggest you have a mechanic check out the car for a tune-up if you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself.
Good luck!
