Mitsubishi Repair: Service Engine Light, negative battery cable, service engine soon light

I have a 99 Mirage de. The service engine soon light came on. I noticed that the gas attendent had forgot to put my gas cap back on the last time I got gas. I know this can cause the service engine soon light to come on. The question is: How do I get the light to shut off now?

Usually, the easiest way to reset your timing light is to disconnect your negative battery cable for about 30 seconds to a minute.  Reconnect the cable and start the car.  If the check engine light turns off after a few seconds, you're all set.  If it still stays on, your car's computer is still detecting a problem somewhere.  If your light does stay on, see if there is an AutoZone in your area.  They can diagnose your check engine light for free.
