Mitsubishi Repair: Eclipse Stalling, fuel pressure regulator, buying a new car

Question
96 Mitshubishi Eclipse, 2.0L, GS, manual.  Started last week, when coming to a stop or slowing down to make a turn, the car stalls out.  If giving gas the car is fine, no check engine light, not anything.  When push in clutch to stop or slow to turn RPM's drop to 0 and stalls.  Does not always do it but often. Any Ideas? Thank you

Answer
Mike,
Have your mechanic check the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor and the Throttle Posistion Sensor (TPS). The IAC motor is also referred to as the Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor. That motor is resposible for keeping your idling at a constant RPM when your car is at a stop. Your TPS is responsible for letting your car's computer (ECU) know how far the throttle plate is open. Your ECU uses this information to tell your fuel pressure regulator and injectors how much fuel to put in your engine. If you find that either your TPS or IAC is malfunctioning, replace them. Along those lines, also check your Base Idle Setting Screw (BISS). It's located at the top of your throttlebody. If your idle is set too low, and the BISS is in too tightly, your idle will be too low and could stall your engine.

Your air filter and fuel filter should be replaced if it's been longer than 2 years since you last replaced them.  Your throttle body should be cleaned as well if it never has been before.

Your PCV valve should be replace as well if you haven't replaced it in over a year. They are cheap, easy to find (any auto store should have them), and can take less time to install then pumping a full tank of gas.

Have your spark plugs and plug wire inspected to ensure they are in good working order.  They should be replaced every 36,000 miles.

Consider having your timing belt replaced if your current one has more than 60,000 miles on it.  For folks that have had their timing belt break in their 2.0L Eclipses, they usually end up buying a new car.  Much more expensive than replacing the belt.
Good luck!
