Mitsubishi Repair: Catalytic Converter, eclipse gt, chrysler dealer

Question
95 Eclipse GT 5 speed. We have a 'check engine' light on the dash which stays lit. I had the code read at a Chrysler dealer and their response was that the catalytic converter was the cause of the light coming on. Can a CC clog up completely?  Can a clogged CC shut down the engine, or otherwise effect engine performance? Can I just ignore it? Should I replace it or just remove it?  The car is running great. Just an irritating and worrisome light. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Joe,
Unless you have emissions or other types of state inspections for automobiles in your state, then a malfunctioning CC is not a big deal.  If it was clogged, your car wouldn't even run.  It's real difficult to even clog up a CC.

The CC's job is to convert unburned fuel in the exhaust to a more environmently-friendly gas before it leaves your car.  If your CC can no longer do that, your check engine would most likely come on.  If your state requires annual inspections on emissions and/or safety, they probably won't pass your car if that check engine light is on.

If the check engine light bothers you enough, get the CC replaced.  The environment and the cars behind you seeing the black smoke coming form your tailpipe will thank you ;-)
Good luck!
