Mitsubishi Repair: 90 Plymouth Lazer, 2.0L, auto, crankshaft pulley, plymouth lazer

Question
The engine overheated, suspect water pump because the heater blew cold air. However, it will not start. starter engages and engine turns over but will not start. I'm afraid the engine is toast, how/what do I check it?

Answer
Donald,
There may be a problem with your crankshaft pulley and/or the drive belts that are on it.  The belt for your water pump may have broke, and took out the belt to your alternator.  It's not too likely, but possible.

You should have your compression checked.  If a car is allowed to overheat, that could blow the head gasket.  That can loss of coolant pressure to travel through your heater core, and will result in low compression. See if there is any water in your oil (i.e. drain your oil and check it).  If you drive too long with your engine overheated, it will also burn off all your coolant and eventually your engine will seize up completely.  Then, your engine would literally be toast.  A compression test will reveal this pretty quickly.

Another possible problem could be with your car's computer.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU shows evidence of corrosion due to leaking capacitors, it will need to be replaced.  Pull your ECU out and inspect it.
Good luck!
