Mitsubishi Repair: Mitsubishi Transmission, mitsubishi transmission, shift linkage

Question
I have a 89 mits Galant, of which I just purchaced from a car auction.  I have had to repair some minor problems, it seems to have a good strong engine, but, I am having a problems with the transmission, it is skipping, getting stuck, won't go past 2nd or 3rd gear, and, popping out of gear.  I was told that I would have to replace tranny w/ a rebuilt, or whatever, $1600 I don't have, and, am not sure I want to sink it into it...I was also told about this sensor thing that also might be causing the problem, and it also sounds like this may be the answer, and a less expensive way to go. how do I diagnose this for sure and what might I tell the transmission guys to fix it? Who do I goto?

Answer
Paula,
There are a couple main causes to your problems. One, there may be internal damage to the transmission. And two, the shift linkage may need to be adjusted.

When a manual tranny pops out of a gear it is usually because the lugs on the gear are worn or the lugs on the slider or something jamming in the interlock preventing you from fully engaging the gear. A very worn fork can also do it.

Have your mechanic check the linkage first.  If that's not the problem, you may be in need of a transmission rebuild.  But, by all means, get more than one opinion from as many transmission shops as you can find.
Good luck!
