Motorcycle Repair: mag shovel - kick start

Question
hello.
bought a '76 rigid shovel last year.  motor was completely done over, its 80 inch now with 2 plug heads, M5 magneto w/ single fire ignition, SS super E, etc.

kicking can be a challenge!  still trying to dial in the recipe.  cold and hot are ok - mostly 1 - 3 kicks and she fires up.

warm seems to be the challenge - and especially with weather cooling down.  I'm running straight 70 SAE oil.  I don't have an ignition cut-off (only a momentary on/off switch) - so priming kicks are hard to do since there's always chance of a wicked kickback!

any advise?  ALWAYS INTERESTED IN WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY.  I am reluctant to use enrichner - but maybe I should...

much appreciated,
G-man in San Jose CALIF.

Answer
If you are in cool weather I would switch to 50w oil.
You can get easier starts by retarding the timing a little. I would also add a ignition switch so you can do a priming kick. That would also make kick starting easier.
Good luck and happy riding
