Motorcycle Repair: bike winterization

Question
Hi Wayne i have a question about winterization. I own a 2005 kawasaki vulcan 800 classic. How can i drain fuel out of the carburetor without having to remove the air filter housing. Is it possible to drain fuel from the tank and run the bike with the fuel valve in the reserve position. MY bike doesnt have a off position on fuel valve.Only reserve prime and on.Thank you for any help.

Answer
Hi Fred,

See if your carbs have drain screws on the float bowls.
If so just open those to drain the carbs.
You could also just add some fuel stabilizer to the fuel
and run it a bit.

You might be able to suck the fuel out the top
of the tank with a syringe and a piece of fuel line.

You may be able to pick up a small siphon pump.

If you drain the carb and/or the tank then you can
run it on reserve until it stops.

Many people keep their tanks full to prevent condensation
and rust inside but add fuel stabilizer to keep the
fuel from going bad while in storage.

Fuel stabilizer is available at most auto stores.
