Motorcycle Repair: 1982 honda v45 turn signals, turn signal switch, jumper wire

Question
QUESTION: I replaced a broken rear turn signal when I tighten it down it twisted and shorted out I repaired the  short and replaced the fuse now neither rear signal work but both work with a jumper wire to the hot

ANSWER: Hi Richard,

Check the white/green wire for power on your flasher unit.
The flasher relays the power to the grey wire that goes
up to the turn signal switch on the bars.

If the flasher has power then try connecting the white/green
to the grey to bypass the flasher and see if the signals come on.

It might be a bad flasher or loose ground wire if both
signals are not working.

The signals need a good ground and power from the flasher
and turn switch to work.

Let me know if you need more info.

The flasher should be under the seat or side cover
with white/green, grey and green wires on it.

QUESTION: Hi. Wayne I'm sorry I should have let you know I already tried the flasher with a known good one as that also was my first guess after the fuse.I've tried separate grounds right to the battery but no success I was wondering if it could be in the auto canceler. I'm pretty fair a trouble shooting electrical but this one has me stumped it's not mine I'm just doing it for a friend I was just going to wire in a new blinker circuit but there is a lot more in the harness then I'm used to as I normally work on rat bike bobber stuff. So any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated thanks Richard

Answer
Hi Richard,

All the diagrams I could find seem to indicate that the circuit
is fairly basic. The flasher should have power on the white/green
wire with the ignition on.

If you connect a light to the grey flasher wire the light should flash.

The grey wire goes up to the signal switch where it is redirected to
the left or right signal.

Use a test light or multimeter to verify the power path.

If the grey wire has power up to the signal switch
but not through it then the switch is malfunctioning.

If the power gets through the switch then the signal wires
for right or left should have power. If the power is getting
through to the signal wires then check for bad ground
on the green wire to the rear signals.

You can run jumpers at any point to verify the power or ground circuits.

If you have another separate box for signal cancelling
you should be able to jump over that with the help
of a wiring diagram.

This is a 1982 VF750/Magna v45 correct?

Thanks, let me know if you have any more info on
the signal system as it is on that bike.

Remember to follow the path of the power from the flasher to
the lights to verify each section one at a time.

NOTE:
The V65 models did have the signal cancel device and
it grounds the blue/black wire temporarily
to make the signals flash and then disconnects the
ground when the signals are cancelled.
