Motorcycle Repair: starter not staying engaged, kawasaki kz750, kawasaki kz

Question
I have a 1984 Kawasaki Kz 700, when I try to start the motorcycle, the engine will sometimes turn over other times you can hear what sounds like the starter spinning but not fully engaging the motor. This makes it very difficult for me to get the bike started. With my limited mechanical experience, seems to me that this would lead to it being the solenoid, if it is, do I replace both the starter and the solenoid or just the part in question. I have had this problem since sometime last year and just haven't been able to take the time to fix it, but it can no longer wait. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi James,

That would be your starter drive clutch slipping.

This is located under the flywheel rotor and
consists of some springs, roller bearings and
also the gear it all turns. It is a one clutch assembly
and should only hold in one direction.
When it slips backwards the starter does not
engage the engine to rotate it.

Here is a link to a page about it:

You can sometimes get a rebuild kit but make sure
all the parts are in perfect shape otherwise.

You will need to remove the engine cover and pull
the flywheel off as well to get at it. A shop manual
would be helpful or look at parts diagrams on the net.
