Motorcycle Repair: 1969 Honda CL125 gas tank is loose, honda cl125, rubber mounts

Question
Hello, Wayne --
I recently bought a 1969 Honda CL125 Scrambler with 4,000 actual miles on it. It is in beautiful condition, runs perfectly and rides well, but the gas tank is loose. It's not falling off or rattling around, but you can shift it from side to side. I can only assume that a rubber shim or spacer has rotted away or fallen off, or that it wasn't put back when it should have been. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Frank,

It can be somewhat normal for the tank to
wiggle a bit on the rubber supports. If it
is really excessive then the front support rubber
holders are either faulty or missing.

Just pull the fuel line off the carb and then
lift the rear of the tank a bit.
Not too far or you may damage
the paint on the front of the tank.

Pull the tank backwards off the front tank rubber
mounts. See if the rubber mounts are missing
or faulty and replace as necessary.

Check the rear tank mount as well for problems.

Very nice bikes and nice to work on too.
