Motorcycle Repair: motorcycle gone dead, 1976 honda cb550, brake light switch

Question
1976 Honda CB550 f, just got 'er running again after 4+ years.  Great first ride but noticed brake light switch not working.  So I get home park and tinker with iginition switch in "on" position and the rear brake light switch fals apart in my hands but copper connections hit bike frame (ground); makes a spark then Blow main fuse.  No no power anywhere!  No lights, etc.
I reoplaced main fuse, which was a 30 amp (yikes, supposed to be 15).  All other fuses were too high as well (15 instead of seven).  I replaced with proper fuses but still no power.....at all.
I will cut out brake light switch aand replace but, OMG, did I fry entire wiring system?
I can't get any electrical power to any part of bike after all working fine.  Please advise and how to trouble shoot.  I guess I'm buying some voltmeter......
Thank you, any help appreciated.

Answer
Hi Don,

It should be fairly easy to trace the problem with a test light or multimeter.

-Start at the battery and check for power on the red/white wire.
-Then check for power on both sides of the fuse with the red wires.

-The power then goes to the ignition switch which distributes power
to the rest of the bike including the brake switch you mentioned.

You should be able to find a break in the power flow along
the paths I mentioned. It will either be a burned wire or bad connection
on a fuse or connector.

See if the power is getting through the ignition switch, it may have a problem there.

Luck!
