Motorcycle Repair: setting timing on 1985 v65 magna, cam lobes, cam gear

Question
How do you properly set the timing on the rear head of a 1985 VF1100c .

Answer
Adam, Ive not had to do this but a similar bike was in my shop. Try turning the engine over with a socket and ratchet off the flywheel crank bolt. Pull the spark plugs and rotate the crank untill the piston reaches TDC with the cam lobes away from the valves. The flywheel should have a timing mark in the window to show that the piston is at TDC. Now the cam should show a timing mark on the cam gear at the top of the cam. Some of these models have two lines scribed across the cam gear to line up along the surface of the cylinder head. This shoulget you in the ballpark.
