Motorcycle Repair: 1983 Honda CM250 frt brake cable replacement, honda cm250, pivot bolt

Question
I certified my bike last October and the cable was freed up then.  Now after sitting all winter it has seized again.  I want to replace the cable.  I have taken off the old one and have rerouted the new cable.  I am not sure how to move the lever back that the cable has to go in so I can tighten it.

Answer
Carol,

You are working with two springs on your brake panel

One on the cable and one on the lever, itself.

First of all make sure that the brake arm on the brake panel moves easily back and forth against the lever spring. If it binds or sticks in any position, the brake panel must come off so the brake cam can be cleaned and lubricated where it turns in the brake panel

The easiest way to change out that cable would be to leave the top of it loose, connect the bottom part at the brake panel. Pull the brake arm forward to feed the cable into the panel lug and place the coil spring on the cable end, before putting it through the brake arm joint. Secure the adjustment nut on a few threads, then go back to the handlebar. Remove the brake lever pivot bolt (clean and lubricate it), put the cable into the adjuster and into the lever bracket. Hook the end of the cable into the lever end hole, then pull the lever into the bracket. Reinstall the pivot bolt and nut. Make your main adjustment on the brake cable at the wheel, then you can make fine adjustments at the handlebar adjuster.

Hope that is clear enough for you,
