Question
Hi Mr. Silver. I have a 1983 hondamatic cm450a. When i have the bike going above 30mph and i roll off the throttle to stop or slow down i hear a chattering noise coming from the transmission not while im rolling on the throttle, what could be causing this any help would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time

Answer
Fred, it would seem like you are hearing the sounds of chains rattling, so check:

The rear drive chain first. You should only have about 3/4" of slack mid-way between the two sprockets at the tightest point on the chain. You may be hearing the chain slapping the chain guard or the swing arm when you are on/off the throttle.

Not so easy to check/remedy the balancer chain adjustment, located beneath the right side clutch/converter cover.

#8 shows the adjustable stopper plate, which can be rotated once the locknut is loosened.

I think you will have to remove the cover to access the balancer adjuster, which is located behind the converter.

I would drain the oil, change the filter and look for any signs of debris, in case something else is coming apart. If oil is clean and nothing in the filter, then all the racket is probably the balancer chain whipping around in there. Get to it soon!
