Motorcycle Repair: no spark, how to clean inside of tank, rotor honda, stator plate

Question
QUESTION: My husband has a 1974 Honda MT 250. He has put a lot of work into. I finally found him points at a shop in Oregon.  Thing is no colored wires from the coils. He doesn't know where they go. He's tried looking up stator plate wiring Diagram. Gets everything but the one he needs. He told me even if there was a picture of the coils, and wires he could figure it out. He's not getting any spark.
Please help me help him. Oh yea!  Almost forgot. There is this gross stuff in the gas tank. He said it was old solidified fuel. Any ideas how to get it out? We don't have access to a sand blaster.

ANSWER: Katherine,

Basically, you just change the two loose wires that are connected to the points from the old set to the new set. You will need a special tool rotor puller to remove the rotor/flywheel, so you can access the parts.

shows an example of that kind of tool. Contact the seller to see if he has the correct one for your bike or check with your local m/c parts supplier to order.

"No spark" can be the coil, dirty points, points not opening, bad condenser, bad coil, KILL switch interference, ignition switch grounding the ignition or bad wiring in between.

It is nasty stuff, but if you find some acetone at a paint supply shop, it will pretty much melt out whatever varnish deposits are in the fuel tank. Use good gloves and don't get it on the paint/decals. Have plenty of dry towels/paper towels to clean up spills. A bottle or two of Berryman's carb cleaner will do it, too. Flush out with alcohol, when the gunk is dissolved and dispose of properly.

QUESTION: Do you have actual picture of where exciter coil ,on the stator plate , wires go to as they were cut off when I got the bike

Answer
I don't have anything specific on these bikes.... too new for me!

However, a little searching on the web yielded

or buy this shop manual..... for more details and troubleshooting tips.

or

The coil nearest the points needs to connect to them. The other wire to the points goes up to the ignition coil.
