Motorcycle Repair: 1982 suzuki gs 850, suzuki gs 850, airbox

Question
Hi i am having trouble with my 1982 suzuki gs 850 when i start the bike it runs fine for a few moments then it starts to pour fuel out of the breather hose off the top of the cylinder heads into the airbox. Why is this happening and how do i fix it? Thank you

Answer
Kendall, There are vent passages in the intake side of the carb to allow air to pass into the fuel bowl to keep it from vapor locking as well as building atmospheric pressue to push the fuel up the emulsion tube to be siphoned into the engine. The float may not be shutting off the fuel enough and allows it to come out of the equalizer tubes into the intake side of the carb or the air box side if you will causing this condition. The carbs have to be pulled and the float bowls pulled. There may even be a spring loaded pin stuck down on the float needle not shutting off the fuel.
