Motorcycle Repair: 81 virago, clutch lever, motorcycle oil

I have a 81 virago that has a clutch prob. it wont disengage! how do I fix this. I was told to drain the oil and put motorcycle oil in it and rock it back and forth to free up the plates. I think I may have to replace the plates . Is that a difficult task?

If the clutch is stuck, the easiest thing to try is to rock it back and forth in gear with the clutch lever in.  It may free fairly easily.  Otherwise, you may have to physically separate the plates.  I do not think you will need new plates, get it working again first; new plates are only necessary if the clutch slips.
