Motorcycle Repair: 1999 Suzuki 1400 Intruder exhaust, suzuki 1400 intruder, bikebandit com

Question
I recently purchased a 99 Suzuki 1400 Intruder and have noticed that it is backfiring and is a bit sluggish when I give it gas. I noticed that the backfiring sound is coming from the junction of the exhaust pipe from the head joins the muffler and it is getting discolored at this junction. From what I've gathered so far, there should be a crush gasket that might have gone bad. I can not find directions on removing the muffler and replacing the gasket. I was wondering if you could help me with where to look for directions to make the repairs.

Thank you,

Answer
Hey Al,
It sounds like you've already made some progress, that' good. I think you can find the information and parts you need at a couple of places online. I often use the one below, the page should be your exhaust diagram.

As for getting the exhaust system off; break the bolts loose at each location, (cylinder-head, mufflers to frame and clamps, front and middle. The mufflers connect together in front of the tire. Then come back and take thee bolts out, start with the mufflers, be sure to loosen the clamps on the muffler pipes a lot or it will be more difficult to get the pipes apart and back together later. After the mufflers are off then you can remove the header pipe and get to that pesky gasket. Reassemble in reverse of this and it should be no problem. When you have it apart will be the best time to clean it too, those tight places bite!
Have fun,
Terry.
