Motorcycle Repair: Have a question, valve stem seals, breather tube

Question
I have a GS 500 and when I give it gas the RPMs drop but it doesnt cut off and when I start my bike it seems to be burning a lot of oil what is the problem?

Answer
Justin, Im not sure how to answer you, but check a couple of things. Open the air box and see if the oil is in the bottom of the air box or on the filter. Second check the oil level in the engine. With the bike level on the center stand depending on the year it may have a sight glass or dipstick make sure its not over full. It could have enough blow by to pump the excess oil into the air box through the breather tube. If oil level is correct the start with the spark plugs. Pull them to see if they are oily and burnt black. If so try a new set of plugs and drop one number to the next hotter range(example if bike has B8ES then go to a B7ES). If the smoke doesnt clear up running it there may be an internal problem with the engine. Valve stem seals, rings, damaged piston ect.
