Motorcycle Repair: oil leak bottom of engine, honda shadow 1100, sealer dries

Question
Hi, 1997 Honda Shadow 1100 on the bottom of the engine...toward the front, are two little dots one on each side. Looks like it may be some type of small plug. (smaller than pencil eraser) The one on the right is leaking oil. Can you identify this and how to repair it. I have a picture that I can send.
Thanks,

Answer
Wanda, I don't see anything on the microfiche which indicates a "removable" part, so assume that you are looking at some oil gallery plugs that were installed after they drilled the passages into the cases. Those are generally a pressed-in fitting, often with a little sealant. Depending upon the amount of leakage. you might be able to just clean the area with brake cleaner/alcohol and then dab some black RTV/high-temp silicone sealer on the end, letting it set up overnight.

If it is below the oil fill level, the push of the oil in the crankcases may keep pushing oil past the plug before the sealer dries, however. If that is the case, then you would have to drain the oil, let it sit for a few hours, then try the sealant repair.

A machine shop might try to make up a new plug with a little interference fit, then chill the plug before insertion. You might be able to carefully drill it out or drill in a centering hole and use an easy-out tool or puller to remove the old one, measure it up, clean the hole carefully after oil is no longer present and then insert a new one. There is no part number for this, so you will have to have some skilled experts help out with making and installing a replacement.

Another product to try would be some "Quik" J-B Weld, which sets up in about 20 minutes, but again needs to be applied to a clean surface. It has a tendency to slump/run downwards before setting up firmly, so might not be that good for an upside-down application.
