Motorcycle Repair: Clutch Lever Is Too Far OUT !, cam wheel, clutch lever

Question
Hi Mike

You've helped me out so much in the past and hopefully you can do it again with this problem.

Got a 1985 FLHTC Electra Glide Classic.

When I put my bike in first gear my clutch lever comes-out
more than HALF WAY.

Its too far out for me Mike. Its a new clutch cable. The mechanic says he adjusted it ~ but its too far out before it engages the first gear.

Mike how can I adjust it so the clutch lever comes out no more than an inch or so ?
Mike is there a way to get down to that measurement ?

Thanks Mike
Ray :-)

Answer
Ray, Recheck the adjustment. The pivot bolt on the perch may have some wear but try to adjust the cable so that a slight squeeze on the lever ther should be about 2mm of gap at the outer edge of the perch where the lever pivots in the perch. This should get you in the ballpark for the proper adustment of the cable. Now the lever can get bent forward and feel like its not fitting the hand any more. There are some options to try one is to get an adjustable lever with a cam wheel to fit to different size hands another is warming the lever with a propane bottle torch and slightly bending the lever back to fit your hand better. Be carefull of this method as the metal will bend but also break of due to its metal compounds. If you have a vice available put the lever in if while warming or bending so the bike wont get damaged if you slip off. See if this helps in any way.
