Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki GN250 electrical issues, suzuki gn250, regulator rectifier

Question
Hi Bill,
I have an 86 Suzuki GN250, I know its not your area but I'd appreciate the help. The bike has an issue holding battery charge or rather charging while running. I have replaced the battery but I'm not good with the electrical side of things...
Do you know if this is a common fault or has the alternator or something worn out?
Appreciate your help,
Ben

Answer
Ben, Motorcycles have a simple charging system, but it has several parts.

There is a stator surrounding the permanent magnet rotor on the end of the crankshaft. It creates AC voltage to be fed to the regulator-rectifier assembly, usually mounted near the battery box, under one of the side covers.

Go to www.electrosport.com and check for the troubleshooting charts.

These bikes were seldom seen in the US, so I don't have a lot of first-hand knowledge of them and any inherent issues.
