Motorcycle Repair: 07 GSX-X 750 Wheels, aluminum wheels, blast cabinets

Question
I'm trying to find out watch material these wheels on my bike are made of because I'm wanting to have them blasted so i can get them powder coated? Thank you

Answer
Dustin,They are a magnesium wheel. Similar to aluminum but stronger.Find a machine shop that does media blasting and see if they use baking soda or a very fine glass bead powder so it wont damage the polished surfaces. I mounted some tires on a custom built bike that had true aluminum wheels, the spokes were actually initials spelling out the shops name. That material is really soft and marks up really bad quickly. The regular sand used in blast cabinets may be to course and damage the surfaces on your rim that sometimes have a clear coat on it to keep them from corroding.
