Motorcycle Repair: 1980 yamaha xs1100 special, rear wheel assembly, splined shaft

Question
How do I install a boot over a drive shaft on a 1980 yamaha xs1100 special?

Answer
Glenn,This going to be difficult to explain. Try to put it on the center stand Remove the rear wheel and axle. Remove the lower shock bolts then on the sides of the swing arm by the frame there are two caps remove them and pull the pivot bolts and spacers the the swing arm and drive shaft tube will slide back exposing the splined shaft.Pull off the springs that wrap around the boot. Put the new boot on part# 2H7-22189-00-00 about $49.00 then slide the shaft back up to the universal joint. Put transmission in gear because you will have to turn the shaft to go togethor.Slide the swing arm into place and put in the pivot bolts and torque the pivot bolts then lock the lock nuts in place. Install the shocks then pull the shaft boot over the rest of the tube mounts then install the rear wheel assembly.Make sure you put a film of grease on the rear axle for ease of removal later.
