Motorcycle Repair: Oil in stator housing, bill silver, general export

Question
Hello Bill,
Bike is a 1970 Honda CD90Z, 4 stroke(general export model). I took the cover plate off the stator to check on the timing, there was a pool of oil in the bottom, when I leaned the bike over, a lot of oil poured out. I do not know if oil is supposed to be in there, being electical, or if there is a leak from the sump. The engine has just been rebuilt with new gaskets in place, I cant find any info in the manual to tell me.
Thanks if you can help me,
Ken

Answer
Ken, no worries, mate! Honda put all the stators inside the crankcase and coated them with epoxy so the oil doesn't cause a breakdown of the insulation. There is no issue with something catching fire in there. A number of models did have "dry" stator charging system from 1958 to about 1964, but then all were redesigned for oil-cooled charging systems.

Just check the oil with the bike upright, to ensure you have it to the top level on the dipstick.
Do not screw the stick in for oil checking, just dip it in and take a reading.
