Motorcycle Repair: 1984 magnum v65 1100cc, starter clutch, starter solenoid

Question
Hi Bill, Could you please tell me where to find the solenoid and starter on my bike. It starts then kicks out and backfires.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Answer
Jim, the starter solenoid is up by the battery, usually with a fuse holder attached. It connects to the battery post on one end and the starter motor on the opposite end.

If the starter starts to engage and then slips/squeals or disengages the engine while trying to turn the engine over, then the starter clutch springs are probably worn/broken.

Backfiring normally is due to lean mixtures or ignition timing problems, but in some cases I can see how it may occur if the starter clutch fails to completely turn the piston past the TDC/firing points.
