Motorcycle Repair: SYNETHETIC TRANNY & ENGINE OIL ?, motorcycle oil, weep hole

QUESTION: HI GARY

I'M COMING UP ON A TRANSMISSION CHANGE ON MY 1985 H-D ELECTRA GLIDE CLASSIC.

I CAN'T FIND MY DARE SERVICE MANUAL, I KNOW ITS SOMEWHAT. WHY I MISPLACED ITS DUE TO MY 70yr. OLD HOLLOW BRAIN . . . LOL

SERIOUSLY GARY.

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO PUT IN THE TRANNY AND ARE THEIR ANY FILTERS/SPRING OR ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE TO KNOW INSTEAD OF JUST POURING IN TRANNY OIL ?

ANSWER: Ray, Im going to try this from memory. The oil should be about 1 qt. Try Amsoil 80-90 synthetic gear lube. It will shift so much easier. Some models had a weep hole to leak out excess fluid,but if you hold the bike straight up when filling the case it will go alot easier. When you go to change the oil in the engine try the Amsoil there also and the primary case use the Amsoil fluid there and you may even see an increase it mileage. My mechanic experienced a 9 mile to the gallon increase by doing just these tricks.Oh by the way there are no screens or filters in the tranny case.

ANSWER: Yes as a matter of fact I do. I use the Amsoil Dominator premix in my race quad and it uses a 10W40 in the engine,it shifts like butter.My bikes use Amsoil fork oil and engine oils and I can run more miles between changes. I have even converted a customer who was Mobil one only for his Harley, He was talked into it by my brother probably on a dare and found out he had to turn his idle down because the motor ran better without the piston ring drag and he started shiftin easier after about 15 miles. Harley is now reccomending synthetics in their newer bikes right from the start.

I was just wondering before I start buying AMSOIL 4 my engine & tranny.
Would using synthetic Amsoil hurt me engine or performance being that my
Harley is a 1985 FLHTC ?

Ray, Go ahead and use it,there should be a noticable increase in performance. If you are not sure there is a distributor in McPherson Kansas who has all kinds of literature on the oils tested and is an avid biker himself. His name is Wayne Koehn and he has been selling this brand of oil probably since the early 80's. He,s had a stroke and is in his 60,s but still rides and sell his oil to dealers. Ill try to get his phone number and address som he can send some literature to you for research. Thanks again and Merry Christmas..
