Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki GN250, suzuki gn250, starter relay

Question
I am the (now not so proud) owner of a GN250 1992, i have now had a reoccurring issue, the original issue was that the engine wouldn't tick over from pressing the ignition button, kill switch was ok, taps open, ignition key in and on, everything correct, i then took it to garage, and they fixed that issue only for a new one to occur, where the starter motor would continue to tick over, even after engine was turned off and key was removed from the ignition. after 5 dissappointing trips to the garage, the original issue has now started to reoccur the same garage are now claiming that the issue is the starter motor itself, at which point i have decided to fix the bike myself, is there a routine i can go through to get to the root of the problem?

Answer
Ciaran,There could be one main problem causing other problems to crop up. The starter could be taking too may amps to turn over and the starter relay may be burning the contact points inside of it due to the amperage draw. The starter relay part# 31800-49100 is about $58.00 but the replacement starter part# 31100-05510 is about $350.00.The starter relay may have stuck on causing the starter to stay engaged, because its fed from the battery direct. This may be an expensive fix to replace both and the gasket and oil in the engine if you have to pull the side cover.
