Motorcycle Repair: yamaha fz 750, yamaha fz 750, loose fit

Question
you may or may not be able to help me but if not i wont leave bad ratings, question is about my 86 yamaha fz 750,im in the process of replacing the original blown motor and the engine i aquired seems to have some play on the front sprocket,is that normal? and if not how tight should i make it? it has a retaining washer on it but i dont know bikes so i dont know if that little bit of play (maybe less than quarter inch) is normal or bad

Answer
The front sprocket is usually loose in the direction of the shaft (axially) but there should be not much movement in the direction of rotation.  The splines should not be worn; typically they are not.  You will noticec that the retaining washer is a relatively loose fit, this is no problem.  Good luck,  Jan
