Motorcycle Repair: camshaft install question on 86 xr250r, cam lobes, bolt holes

Question
im reinstalling my camshaft, my question is with timing marks lined up when i go to bolt up cam to gear which direction should the cam lobes be pointing in order for the cam to be at TDC also?

Answer
Tony Im going to try this from memory. The crankshaft will be at TDC with the timing mark in the window on the side cover. The cam gear will have the mark at the top of the gear some gears have two line type marks on each side to align along the head. The cam will have the lobes up and the bolt holes should line up with the cam gear holes. Put the two bolts in and lock-tite the threads then install the chain tensioner and turn the engine over with a socket on crank bolt. Pull the spark plug and insert a small wire or screw driver and feel for the top of the piston when the piston is at TDC it should feel like its at the top of the chamber and the timing mark should be in the timing window. Then set the valve lash gap to factory specs and button it up at should work.
