Motorcycle Repair: Grinding sound, clutch basket, component failure

Question
QUESTION: I have 2005 fatboy (carb). When I start the engine I get a grinding sound. It does not happen all the time. I have a new battery (13+ volt at rest) and the charging system ok (getting 14+volt at around 2000rpm). It happens more often after I got 95cu upgrade (new cams, piston, higher compression...). Could my starter be going out or could the sprocket gear or the flywheel have broken teeth?

ANSWER: Pull your primary cover and check your ring gear and the gear on the jackshaft. Your right, you could have damaged teeth. If they are ok then you will have to pull your starter and inspect it.

QUESTION: If it's the gear on the jackshaft, what would cause the teeth to brake besides component failure? Don't know if there are any bearing in the jackshaft that would make it loose which could cause the alignment to be off when it engaging the flywheel. Any info is appreciatted.

Answer
The only bearing would be in the primary case. Usually if there is any wear it is the ring gear on the clutch basket. It can be failure or if the bike is to far advanced it will cause the gear on the jackshaft hammer on it because of backlash in the motor.
