Motorcycle Repair: 1995 Suzuki GXS600F Katana Oil Leak, oreilys auto parts, 10w40 motor oil

Question
Hello,
I have a 1995 Suzuki GSX600F Katana and I have been experiencing some oil leaks. I was looking over the bike and I saw on the right side there was a crack on one of the engine cover (at least I believe it is), it has SUZUKI imprinted on it. I was wondering what the part is called and if it is the cause of the oil leaks? Is it still safe to ride? I toke a picture of the cover that is cracked, I could send it to you if you want.

Also I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to up keep my bike, and what I should change regularly.

Thank you,
Beau

Answer
Beau, This probably the main crankcase cover and its over the clutch. I was going to get you the part number and a cost but my micro-fische died. Yes it is an important part and you will need a gasket behind it. Also use a good 10w40 motor oil like castrol GTX that you can get at any Auto Zone or Oreilys Auto parts. Also change the oil filter when you drain the oil and repair the cover. Make sure you keep good anti-freeze in it also. If you park the bike for winter put in some Stabil fuel conditioner and run the bike so it get circulated through the system then it can be stored. Just a note if you can disconnect the battery. If the garage is heated its ok to leave it in the bike just put on a automatic trickle charger. If its going to freeze then pull the battery and store it indoors out of the way.Put a charger on it prior to installing back into the bike. Start the bike and run out the stabil then you may have to install new sparkplugs and put in fresh gas and you should be ready for another happy year of riding.
