Motorcycle Repair: Starting problem with 1980 Honda Goldwing, honda goldwing, starter relay

Question
The bike will not crank with plugs installed - perhaps just one rev and then just clunk and relay chatter.  Turns fast with plugs removed.  New starter, good voltage and starter relay probably good.  Possible short, bad starter switch or bad connection under load? Has been stored for 2 years but right now just trying to get it to turn over and will deal with carburetion, etc after that. Have had several opinions from experienced guys w/o any success. Many thanks. Errol

Answer
Errol, Without testing all the electrical components its hard to tell. This may be out there but have you checked the battery condition. Some may hold 12 volts and have not amperage to give the starter any real power. Ive had some that test at 12 volts and are fairly new batteries and have 1 cell shorted or weak and the bike will not start or turn over fast enough without a jumper or charger.Have it load tested then check all the connections.Just a quick note make sure its the right battery for the bike. I have had some with the right size in it but not enough cranking power to start it.
